A protocol that is specifically designed for the transfer of files over the Internet. The files are uploaded onto a FTP server that allows users to access the files using an FTP client. In order to access the files on the FTP server, the user also needs an authorized username and password. FTP allows for the user to log into the network. The directories with files are listed in a in a tree structure similar to Windows Explorer. The user can then copy the required file directly. As a standard, the FTP protocol does not encrypt data, making the unprotected data vulnerable to attacks. In answer to this problem, secure FTP protocols were developed (SFTP).
